Dangerous goods

The ADR tunnel code: B, C, D and E explained

Every tunnel has a category from A to E, and every dangerous substance a tunnel restriction code. The code of your load determines which tunnels you may not pass.

The five categories

A: no restriction. B: restriction for substances that can cause a very large explosion. C: also a large explosion or the release of large amounts of toxic substances. D: also a large fire. E: restriction for all dangerous goods, except a few named substances. The scheme is cumulative: what may not pass a B tunnel may not pass C, D and E either.

The code of your load

The tunnel restriction code is listed per UN number in column 15 of table A in chapter 3.2 of the ADR, and in your transport document. With a combined code such as C/D, the first letter applies to carriage in tanks (and for category D also in bulk), the second to other carriage.

How Truckroute plans with the code

Under Dimensions and weight switch on Dangerous goods and choose the code. With a combined code, tick tank or bulk if that applies. Truckroute then avoids every tunnel prohibited for that code. If you do not know the code, Truckroute uses B, the strictest.
