Abnormal loads
Exemption for abnormal loads: annual or one-off
A transport with an indivisible load that exceeds the legal dimensions or weights needs an exemption from the RDW. Which one depends on the dimensions and the route.
The types at a glance
| Exemption | Validity | For |
|---|---|---|
| Annual exemption | 1 year, only on the green roads in the DWO, per vehicle | Indivisible load up to 27.50 m long, 3.50 m wide, 4.25 m high and 100,000 kg; axle load 10,000 kg (pendulum axle 12,000 kg) |
| One-off exemption | One route, 4 weeks by default (6 to 12 weeks under conditions) | Larger or heavier than the annual exemption, or a route that is not green; longer validity up to 4.50 m wide, 4.50 m high and 60 m long |
| Annual LHV exemption | 1 year, only on the LHV network (green for LHV in the DWO) | Combination up to 25.25 m and 60,000 kg; every vehicle with an LHV entry; driver with a CCV certificate |
Annual exemption: green roads only
An annual exemption only applies on the roads that are green in the Digital Exemptions Road Map when you enter your dimensions there. If the route is not completely green, you apply for a one-off exemption. Each type of transport (for example indivisible load, a high cube container or a flatrack) has its own exemption; they are not interchangeable.
One-off exemption: one route
You make a route proposal in the DWO and apply for the exemption. Above 4.40 m high a route survey is mandatory. Wider than 3.50 m: check the DWO up to 24 hours before departure for roadworks, events or checks on the route. The RDW decides on its own roads within 2 days; with other road authorities 95% is issued within 14 days.
How Truckroute helps
Choose abnormal load under Dimensions and weight and enter the dimensions. Truckroute then plans only over roads where the RDW itself can grant an exemption for those dimensions, and shows the route. You apply for the exemption itself at the RDW; it and the DWO are binding.
Frequently asked questions
What does an exemption cost?
The fees are published by the RDW and are adjusted every year. Truckroute does not include them.
