Cranes

Telescopic crane and ballast: route and exemption

A telescopic crane on its own chassis drives to the job itself. The counterweight and outrigger pads often travel separately, behind the crane or on a semi-trailer. The RDW has its own annual exemption for both.

The crane itself

The telescopic crane falls under the annual exemption for a self-propelled machine: the weight is the number of axles times 12,000 kg, up to 100,000 kg, and the length comes from the vehicle register. See route for a mobile crane.

Ballast behind the crane

If the crane itself tows a trailer with ballast, the exemption is issued on the mobile crane and applies to the whole combination: up to 22.00 m long, 3.00 m wide and 100,000 kg. This is only possible if the combination of the crane in the vehicle register is above 60,000 kg. The trailer may only carry ballast and mast parts and lifting gear of that crane.

Ballast on a semi-trailer

If the ballast travels with a tractor and semi-trailer, the exemption is issued on the semi-trailer: also up to 22.00 m, 3.00 m and 100,000 kg. The load is limited to the ballast, at most 4 outrigger pads of up to 6.50 by 2.75 m, outriggers, hook blocks, winches, mast parts and lifting gear of the crane, and at most one car or van under 3,500 kg and one site cabin up to 6 m. The load does not protrude more than 1.00 m behind the vehicle.

How to plan the trips

Plan the crane and the ballast transport each with their own dimensions: choose abnormal load under Dimensions and weight and enter height, width, length and weight. Truckroute plans over the roads where the RDW can grant an exemption for those dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

May the tractor with the ballast semi-trailer have its own loader crane?

No, according to the RDW the towing vehicle in this combination may not have a loader crane. The semi-trailer may have a light loader crane of up to 8 tonne-metres.
