May a tractor use the expressway or motorway?
The difference between an expressway, a motorway and a normal N road decides where a tractor may drive. A navigation app for cars or trucks does not know that difference for a tractor; the Truckroute app does.
The rule
The motorway is only for a motor vehicle that may and can drive at least 60 km/h, the expressway only for a motor vehicle that may and can drive at least 50 km/h. An agricultural or forestry tractor may drive 40 km/h at most, so both roads are forbidden for a tractor, even if it can technically go faster.
How to recognise them
The motorway starts at sign G1, the expressway at sign G3. An expressway is often an N road with separate carriageways and grade-separated junctions. An N road without sign G3 is not an expressway: a tractor may use it, at 40 km/h outside built-up areas.
In the app
The agricultural route in the Truckroute app never uses a motorway or expressway. If you would also rather avoid the busy 80 km/h N roads, choose Avoid N roads and 80 km/h roads under N roads with your vehicle; the route then takes the back roads.
Navigation for agricultural vehicles is part of the Truckroute app, for iPhone (with CarPlay) and Android. Choose the vehicle type Agricultural, enter the dimensions and weight, and navigate. The route planner on this site calculates for trucks and coaches; only the app calculates the agricultural route.
Frequently asked questions
May a 40 km/h tractor use the expressway?
No. Only a vehicle that may and can drive at least 50 km/h may use the expressway.
May a tractor use an N road?
Yes, if it is not an expressway (no sign G3) and there is no sign C8. Outside built-up areas the tractor may drive 40 km/h there.
